I will make a mess of describing the plot, especially since alne been a couple of days since I finished reading it, so I’m resorting to the book’s blurb: Miranda leaves her mother, determined to find Janus, to kill Lord Last and reclaim her companion. With so much focus on the characters, what about the rest of the book? All the father had done was to take his bastard son off the streets and raise him to be a nobleman.


I quit officially, I cant make it even to the halfway page. Not seething, and no more decadent that any other court I’ve ever read of. She had a goal and underwent any number of trials to reach it. Maldedicte’s servant Gilly, and the king. Seething with decadent appetites unchecked by law or gods, the court of Antyre is ruled by the last of a dissolute aristocracy.

The Miranda and Janus backstory could’ve used more detail too. All the while just waiting for the opportunity to strike, for Black-winged Ani is not a patient deity, and vengeance must be served. When the lord finds out Maledicte’s secret the stakes are even greater. Want to Read saving…. Roughening his voice with poison, Maledicte learns swordplay and espionage. What struck me the most about this novel is that it is both perfectly plotted and still character-driven.

Likewise, considering how much influence Vornatti had, going from rebellious Relict rat to accommodating sex slave literally happened within a span of a few minutes seconds in reading time.

I think it was supposed to be witty mouthing-off, but I found it rather obnoxious. Once the pact is sealed there simply is no way to get out of it. roibns Because of the constant bloodshed and the complexity of themes I would not recommend this book to teens. How is that not awesome? We meet Maledicte when he is the young thief Miranda. Maledicte Maldicte Author s: The fact that her swordplay is just as, if not better written, than her bedplay makes this book not only sexy but entirely sensual and easy to lose one’s self to for hours at a time.

His manners were not at all perfect which was the only reason I could find for the courtiers to consider him enigmaticand his swordplay was not lan. I felt like I was tripping over the words as I read because they were unecessarily complicated to try to create an old world formality that failed. Please do not pick this book up. The characters each burning with their own flame, their own worldviews, and yet, all sharing the same feelings, in differing strengths and varying willingness to act upon them.


Then, just as I’m thinking that this book is not as bad as it wants to be, suddenly Maledicte starts murdering people ruthlessly, a drive instilled by a hungry god.

If you are looking for a different, dark sort of fantasy, give Maledicte a read. I was bored, and just bought it after glancing over the back cover. I do it now without thought. Black-Winged Ani, the god of love malediche vengeance. It took a chapter or two to become used to, being as lyrical as it is, but it makes this story powerful. Not really a reason to murder him. In this new guise, Maledicte is taken in by a deviant count and taught the ways of twisting men and women to do his will, while doing that of the count. Sweet, patient Gilly, who finds himself loving Maledicte even though he thinks he’s a man, and a destructive one at that. Robins has a keen eye for foreshadowing as her plot spirals toward its inevitable end which is somehow shocking, endearing, hopeful, and gives every character what they want—for better or worse.

There’s a lot to love in this book. But might make the disappointment larger. When Janus is abducted and Miranda is unable to stop it, she flees to a temple dedicated to Black-Winged Ani, one of several gods who nobody believes in any longer. There was a problem adding your email address.
