I felt comfortable every time that I opened it, knowing that I would thoroughly enjoy the next hour or two. The protagonist and his friends were a simple group of people who cared for each other as well as humanity on the whole. Another brilliant thing about Chowringhee is the way Sankar has presented the ‘s Calcutta, which we have only seen through movies till now.

As it turns out, dal barely gets a mention in pages, and that’s after tutti frutti ice-cream – a delight in itself. It is the story of barmen, cabaret dancers, struggling private detectives, filmstars, industrialists, hostesses, struggling musicians, laundry men and anyone, who in any capacity, walked the the corridors of the Shah Jahan hotel on Chowringhee. Shankar is immediately befriended by Sata Bose, the hotel’s chief receptionist, and after a brief stint as a typist, Shankar becomes Bose-da’s main assistant and close confidant.
The manager, Marco Polo, takes a liking to him as well, and young Shankar is given more responsibilities by both men.
As both observer and participant in the events, he inadvertently peels off the layers of everyday existence to expose the seamy underbelly of unfulfilled desires, broken dreams, callous manipulation and shankkar tragedy.
