Torqual sets yrilogy with Melancthe. Vance does not simply create a fantasy world for us to immerse ourselves in. Commoners who serve their royal leaders live or die from whimsical commands and perceived slights, but common folk still suffer even if they live far away from the Royal castle on farms and in towns, attacked by brigands, murderers and thieves.

Definitely recommend others to read lyonesde His language is arch and lovely, but I expect he remains undervalued as tilogy comedian, certainly in this work. Lists with This Book.
Almost every part of his adventures as a vagabond comes back to reward him in his time as a king. I was enchanted by the author’s poetic lyricism and inventive imagination, and charmed by the intricate world-building, but I felt sad by the tragedies most characters endure.
There is also the mixture of real and surreal such as the mad King Deuel who sponsors Grand Galas where everybody in his kingdom must dress as birds and Doctor Fidelius: There is no love lost between Suldrun and her parents, who wished for a boy of more robust character, and as with so many young women of her time, to her family she is primarily of use to cement an alliance in marriage.
Vance builds the history of his world using layers of facts, names and religions taken from various European cultures — Greeks, Romans, Celts, pre-Carolingian French and Spanish “kingdoms” etc.
Still, when exercised to excess it becomes tiresome. The magic does not have a strong foothold in the novel despite having creatures of fantasy, rather it adds to the semi historical setting of the novel.
